ALBUM RELEASE

A record about darkness as a place you can enter, not fear. It pairs a world-premiere recording — Kevin Puts' piano concerto Night, written on his Three Nocturnes — with Chopin's Second Concerto, the nocturne where the whole tradition begins.

Kevin is a friend — we were at Young Concert Artists together. We're recording conversations about the piece; they'll live here alongside the music.

ABOUT

Vassilis Varvaresos

Pianist and composer, and one of the most compelling performers of his generation. Winner of the Young Concert Artists Auditions at fourteen; debuts at Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall and the Kennedy Center, and a performance at the White House for President Obama. The 2026/27 season takes him to stages he has made his own and to several new ones: concerts with David Garrett in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum in Salzburg and in Aachen; Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto with the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra under Dionysis Grammenos; and his recital debut in Amsterdam's Bösendorfer Series. The same season brings his first album with orchestra — recorded with London's Philharmonia Orchestra around the world premiere of Night, the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. Previous seasons have taken him to the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Salle Gaveau in Paris, as well as Zankel and Alice Tully Halls in New York. A prizewinner at the Enescu Competition and a finalist at the Monte Carlo Piano Masters, he has worked with conductors including Christoph Eschenbach, James Conlon, Pinchas Zukerman and Justus Frantz, and with orchestras across Europe and every major Greek ensemble. In 2008 he represented Greece on the Athens State Orchestra's tour of China for the Beijing Olympic celebrations. A devoted chamber musician, he performs with Leonidas Kavakos, David Garrett, Noé Inui, Giorgos Demertzis, Angelos Liakakis and Dimitris Tiliakos, and appears at festivals including the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, the Chopin festivals at Nohant, Les Arcs and Deauville, and Lisztomanias in Châteauroux. He has nine recordings to his name, for NAVIS Classics, BIS, Aparté and Mirare; his solo debut V for Valse was awarded five stars by Le Figaro. A true eclectic, he has written music for ten films — among them tributes to Constantin Brâncuși and Julie Mehretu for the Checkerboard Film Foundation — and is at work on a musical-theatre project with author Apostolos Doxiadis. He studied at The Juilliard School (Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate) and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. The first Greek pianist to hold a doctorate in performance musicology, he has been Professor of Piano at the Thessaloniki State Conservatory since 2021. He lives in Paris.
